A unnamed man wakes up cold and alone in the woods, surrounded by strange sights. He is completely lost without any memories until he meets Kuon, a little girl with animal ears and a tail. She saves him and leads him back to her town, all the while fending off "boro-gigiri"—giant centipede-like creatures—and a weird crimson slime. She names him Haku after a notable historical figure from the area when they arrive. He rapidly finds that he is unique—the only person without animal ears or a tail. The two travel to the capital of Yamato, Kuon's home nation, where they meet more people and make new friends while unwittingly delving deeper into Yamato's politics and internal issues...
